Bat Wing Tutorial by harrie5 Bat Wing Tutorial by harrie5

This is a spiritual sequel to Thoughts on Wings by Uzlo

Anyway, I noticed a lot of people expressing a desire for a bat wing version. So here’s a little guide I whipped up on them!

Bat wings are simpler than bird wings in that there’s no feather structure to learn, but you do need to learn the bones. Once you get the hang of those though, they’re pretty easy!

Bat photos are all kinda same-y to be honest (likely due to them mostly being nocturnal), and don’t do a good job of showing how those babies work. So, slowmotion videos are really helpful!

thanks for this wonderful tutorial! It even helps us 3d modelers, although I went a slightly different way as for the membranes, but I made sure she can walk upright yet still fly without a tail is where it is, of course I mentioned you. :)

So, out of curiosity, do you think that in terms of having them folded and making life on the ground, these would be more practical than feathers, or less?

I've been doing some studying cause I want to create a Comic-Book story in a slightly more real style than my normal work (actually in a Manga-ish style) and it turns out that there are several things I've been doing totally wrong for years.

Wings are the biggest one, probably. I never understood how the worked until I read both this and thoughts on wings.

Very cool; helped me a lot, although from what I can see here and on actual bats it doesn't look light it is possible to have bat wings stretch up on a human unless they are bent over. I'll have to think about bat wings some more :)

The first finger by the thumb does not continue and connect with the second, but other than that this is a good tutorial.

Amazing lil tutorial! I found Thoughts on Wings a long time ago and agree that it's a really, well thought out tutorial. I had this amazing dream the other night that involved people with bat/dragon wings and I've been itching to draw from it, so I'm hoping with this tutorial and some photos and videos I can get something done. Thanks very much for uploading ^_^

bat wings are badass because they actually have way more maneuverability then birds. A bat can be in full speed flight and then suddenly be upside down hanging in less then a second. Of course this is simplifying it but birds can pretty much just flap their wings up and down
but bats have the advantage of the long bony fingers which gives them more control. Bat can also make sharper turns and hover.

Bats can also use their wings to walk like Pteranosaurs! :D

It's not a matter of which one is better. It's more of which one is more optimized for what task. Bats have more maneuverability than birds to catch insects in flight and to fly in confined spaces.  Birds can fly longer distances and higher speeds than bats. Have you heard of the peragine Falcon. That bird can hit speeds of up to 200mph on a downflight.

This is amazing! ^^ and I looks like this could be mirrored for bone structure to dragon wings too! :D

I'll have to try it soon! ^.=.^

The tail idea is a very elegant solution to the wing attachment issue!
I also love that you mentioned that the wings should match the skin tone, that's something a lot of people don't think about it. It looks so weird to me, all those white people with dark wings.
